Reading Group is proud to commit to the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) as a part of the larger movement for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions. Boycott is a gift from Palestinians in the form of an offer, a chance to be in solidarity in a material way. It is a gift of systems-thinking splendor against a brutal state apparatus that requires total forgetting, complacency, and separability of peoples and projects. As our friend Fred put it, the invitation to boycott might be thought of as a “refreshment” of our commitments to a life worth living, “here, there, and everywhere.”

Academic and cultural boycott are one important part of the larger BDS movement because the Israeli state knows that its brutality towards the Palestinians must be ideologically contained through words, cultures, and the violent delimitation of alternatives. Boycott, we think, is one of many means by which to refuse this ideological containment and refresh our commitment to the proliferation of alternatives. In the Zohar, an amorphous, intergenerational, interdimensional reading group is on a kind of mystical journey through geographical and textual space, offering each other interpretive readings of Torah to pass the time. When someone offers a particularly beautiful interpretation, the rest of the group bursts into tears. They marvel at each other’s brilliance, hug each other, and continue on, delving deeper into the secret sparks created between Book and World. This, for the record, is what we mean when we say “Reading Group”: a little home-kept infrastructure for the sharing of ideas, interpretations, and alternatives. And this reading group is antithetical to Israel’s colonial violence against Palestine over the past 100 years. It’s our pleasure to refresh and make explicit our commitments to PACBI, to BDS, and to Palestinian life.
